Materials and Technologies for Secure Identity – Designing the Future

Electronic forms of proving identity like the ePass for the first time bridge the gap between traditional ways of proving identity and the authentication and authorization processes of the digital world. New ways of securing and controlling identity have already been embarked on with the advent of biometric security features. A person’s face or fingerprint is a unique individual characteristic of his or her own identity which can neither be transferred nor go missing. Biometric data like the passport photo can be integrated into documents whose information can then be evaluated using appropriate screening methods.

The aim of the future theme “Materials and Technologies for Secure Identity’ is to assess the future potential of electronic security documents, and develop new procedures, methods and technologies for their various fields of application.

Key Areas of Research:
  • Novel, uniquely identifiable materials, and device and production technologies
  • Polymer electronics
  • Self-identifying documents
  • Post-process individualization / personalization
  • Visualization of identity

Projects:
  • New technologies and materials for tomorrow‘s security documents (SecIntCard - PDF)
  • Materials and technologies for secure identity (SecMaTec - PDF)
